PS5 Games on PC Get Closer as AnyPS5 Reaches 96% Shader Coverage

The idea of running PS5 games on PC is getting a little more interesting. An unofficial project called AnyPS5 has made major progress in translating PlayStation 5 software for Windows and Linux computers.

The project now supports around 95.88% of its tracked PS5 GPU shader instructions. That number sounds impressive, but it does not mean that almost 96% of PS5 games can already run on a PC. There is still a lot of work to be done before gamers can expect wide compatibility.

AnyPS5 Reaches Nearly 96% Shader Coverage

According to the latest progress shared on October 5, AnyPS5 supports 1,118 out of 1,166 tracked GPU shader instructions. Earlier progress showed support for 609 instructions, or 52.23%.

That means the project has added support for another 509 instructions between the two progress snapshots.

AnyPS5 takes a different approach from a traditional console emulator. Instead of simply copying the behavior of the PS5 hardware, it converts PS5 executables into formats that can work with Windows or Linux. It also provides replacement versions of PlayStation system libraries.

Its shader recompiler converts console shader programs into SPIR-V, which can then be used by the project’s graphics pipeline.

Shader Support Does Not Mean Game Compatibility

This is the most important point about the latest update. 95.88% shader coverage does not equal 95.88% PS5 game compatibility.

A game needs much more than GPU shader instructions to work correctly. It may also depend on system libraries, CPU functions, graphics features and other PlayStation-specific behavior.

AnyPS5 currently reports 2,538 supported system-library functions out of 3,207 tracked functions, giving it 79.14% coverage. The project also points out that this number only covers functions currently known and tracked by the project.

What This Means for PS5 Games on PC

The latest AnyPS5 progress is still important because shaders are one of the technical challenges involved in bringing PS5 software to PC.

However, reaching 100% shader coverage would not automatically make every PS5 game playable. Missing system functions or other compatibility problems could still prevent a game from starting, running properly or reaching the end.

For now, AnyPS5 should be viewed as a project making serious technical progress rather than a ready-made solution for playing PS5 games on PC.

The 96% figure shows how far the project has come in one specific area. It does not mean that PC gamers are suddenly getting access to the PS5 library. Still, if development continues at this pace, the project could become increasingly interesting to people watching the future of PS5-to-PC compatibility.
