Sony QSSR AI Upscaling Comes to Base PS5

Sony has announced a new AI-powered upscaling technology called QSSR, or Quick Spectral Super Resolution, for the standard PlayStation 5. The technology brings some of the image-quality benefits previously associated with the PS5 Pro to regular PS5 owners.

The first games to support QSSR are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Both titles are already prepared to use the new technology, while other PlayStation developers can now add QSSR support to their games.

What Is Sony QSSR AI Upscaling?

Sony QSSR AI upscaling is designed to improve the clarity and stability of game images without requiring the dedicated AI hardware found in the PS5 Pro.

Until now, Sony’s PSSR technology was mainly associated with the PS5 Pro. The Pro has dedicated hardware capable of handling AI-based image processing at a much higher level. The standard PS5 does not have the same hardware, so bringing similar technology to the console was considered difficult.

QSSR takes a different approach. Sony and its development partners have created a more streamlined neural network that can work within the hardware limits of the standard PS5.

The main goal is simple: improve image quality while keeping the performance cost low.

How QSSR Could Improve PS5 Games

QSSR focuses heavily on fine details and image stability. This can make objects, characters and environments look clearer, particularly when the camera is moving.

Insomniac Games, the developer of Marvel’s Wolverine, says QSSR can add more pixel-level clarity and stability to environments. This could be useful in detailed locations such as busy streets and dense city areas.

Sucker Punch Productions has also highlighted QSSR’s ability to resolve fine details in characters and environments while improving temporal stability in Ghost of Yōtei.

Compared with traditional software-based solutions, QSSR is expected to provide a cleaner and more stable image in supported games.

Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei Get the First Support

Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first confirmed games to use QSSR on the standard PS5.

For players, this means they can experience improved image quality without upgrading to a PS5 Pro. The technology does not automatically appear in every game, though. Developers need to update their titles and add QSSR support.

Sony says QSSR is now available for PlayStation developers. Games that already support PSSR may also be able to add QSSR relatively easily, with adjustments made for the standard PS5’s performance level.

What This Means for PS5 Owners

The arrival of QSSR could make a noticeable difference for standard PS5 players. While PSSR should still have an advantage because of the PS5 Pro’s stronger dedicated hardware, QSSR offers a way to bring advanced AI-based upscaling to a much larger PS5 user base.

If more developers adopt the technology, future PS5 games could benefit from sharper details, better image stability and cleaner visuals without requiring players to purchase new hardware.
